BIBLE : STUDY TOOLS.
“And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.” Exodus 4:2
Tools are important and helpful items that can be used to achieve a goal. However, reading and studying the Bible are the most important in spiritual development. Therefore, the following study tools are meant to simplify the process of Bible study, so as to make the most of your study time.
The most important tool is, a complete Holy Bible (one that has both Old & New Testaments). Getting a Bible that has different translations can enhance very good understanding. If you cannot find one, you can buy two or more Bibles of different versions.
For instance, in addition to having a King James or New King James version of the Bible, you could also get The Living Bible (particularly if you are just starting out in Bible study) or the Amplified version. So, if you read a chapter in the King James Version, you could read that same chapter in the Living or Amplified versions of the Bible to give you a clearer understanding of that chapter.
Concordance
Concordance is an essential tool for studying God’s Word. It is required to help you look up some root words and see how they are translated in other places in the Bible. This ultimately enhances your level of understanding of God’s Word. It also makes cross-referencing easier.
Writing materials such as notebook, pen, etc.
During your studies, you will discover new ideas, encounter insights and revelations. If not written down in your note, they might be forgotten. This is why you must cultivate the habit of writing down insights and revelations.
Statistically, it is said that you will remember some percentage of what you read, but you will most likely remember much more of what you write. Also, you can always refer to what is written, to refresh your memory.
Other Relevant Materials
Publications such as anointed books, tracts, magazines, etc., can be invaluable assets in your study. Particularly for subject study, you will need books by anointed authors; they make your search so much easier.
At a time, my husband, Bishop David Oyedepo, took his Bible, jotter, two books on prosperity, and locked himself in a room for three days. While reading one of the books, he discovered that prosperity is a covenant.
The Holy Spirit directed him to read Deuteronomy 8:18 as a confirmation, and told him that prosperity has no respect for prayer or fasting, but only for the practice of the covenant. So, he screamed, “I can never be poor!” That singular revelation and the consistent practice of that covenant have brought him and multitudes of people out of poverty into Kingdom prosperity today.
In this age of technology, electronic materials such as audio and video CDs, audio books, e-books, teaching tapes, Christian blogs on social media, etc., are very resourceful materials that will greatly aid you in your study.
They help, a great deal, to shed more light on what is already written in the Word, which automatically aids your understanding of God’s Word on every issue of concern…
This text is an extract from the book “GUIDELINES TO EFFECTIVE PERSONAL BIBLE STUDY” written by Faith A. Oyedepo.
