Born on August 31, 1959 in the bustling streets of Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana, Mensa Anamua Otabil is a multi-faceted figure whose journey crosses theology, motivation, entrepreneurship and has had a profound impact on many lives.

The fourth child and third son of Dinah and Lloyd Otabil, Mensa spent his early years in Sekondi-Takoradi before family dynamics took them to Tema. He started his education at Anglican Primary School and then continued at Tema Community Primary and Secondary School No. 3. The Otabil family eventually settled in Accra, where Mensa continued his education at Swedru Secondary School (SWESCO).

Despite life’s challenges, including the loss of both his parents in the mid-1970s, Mensa Otabil persevered. He immersed himself in various religious groups, showing a deep connection to faith from a young age. His devotion and quest for knowledge led him to the audiovisual department of the Ministry of Information.

In 1984, a significant chapter in his life began when he founded the ministry of the Central Gospel International Church. Beginning at the Kanda Cluster of Schools and later at the Sal Valley School, he laid the foundation of a church that would spread its influence across Ghana, Europe, the United States, Canada and other parts of the ‘Africa.

Otabil’s life journey is not limited to the pulpit. It extends to education and consultation. As the founder and chancellor of Central University College, he played a key role in shaping young minds. His entrepreneurial spirit also shines through his role as CEO of Otabil and Associates, a consulting firm specializing in executive growth and leadership.

Family remains at the heart of Mensa Otabil’s identity. Married to Joy since 1986, their union gave them four children: Sompa, Nhyira, Yoofi and Baaba Aseda. His personal life exemplifies the principles he advocates, creating a harmonious blend of faith, family and professional pursuits.

The honors Otabil received reflect the impact he had. Honorary doctorates, a Millennium Excellence Award and the Order of the Volta (Religion) awarded by the Government of Ghana highlight his contributions. In 2018, he was named among the “100 Most Famous Africans”, alongside figures like Kofi Annan and Martin Amidu. Otabil’s influence extends beyond congregations through his radio and television program, “Living Word.”

Addressing a range of topics, from religion and education to economic development and politics, he transcends the confines of a traditional preacher. In politics, Otabil has faced allegations of bias, with some associating him with the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Despite these assertions, he remains a pragmatic voice, navigating societal issues and political affiliations.

The Capital Bank scandal, where Otabil served as chairman, presents a complex chapter. Accusations of improper financial subsidies and mismanagement have emerged, leading to legal battles and calls for accountability. In his defence, Otabil maintains that the board did not mislead the Bank of Ghana and questions the narrative around the bank’s collapse.
