Tim LaHaye, also known as Timothy Francis LaHaye, was born on April 27, 1926, and passed away on July 25, 2016. He was a Baptist Christian pastor and an author.
Timothy Francis LaHaye was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 27, 1926, to Frank LaHaye and Margaret LaHaye. The death of his father at the age of nine deeply affected him, but he found solace in the words of a pastor at the funeral, who spoke of the resurrection of believers upon the return of Jesus Christ. In 1944, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces after completing evening school. In 1947, he married Beverly Ratcliffe. In 1950, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bob Jones University.
He served as a pastor in Pumpkintown, Pickens County, South Carolina. From 1950 to 1956, he was a pastor at a Baptist church in Minneapolis. Subsequently, he moved to San Diego, where he served as the pastor of Scott Memorial Baptist Church (now known as Shadow Mountain Community Church) from 1956 to 1981. In 1971, he founded Christian Heritage College, now known as San Diego Christian College. In 1972, he assisted in establishing the Institute for Creation Research in El Cajon, along with Henry M. Morris. In 1976, he co-authored the book “The Act of Marriage: The Beauty of Sexual Love” with his wife Beverly. In 1977, he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Western Seminary. In 1979, he encouraged Jerry Falwell to establish the Moral Majority and served on its board of directors. In 1995, he embarked on the 16-book series “Left Behind” with writer Jerry B. Jenkins.
Tim LaHaye passed away on July 25, 2016, at the age of 90, in San Diego, following a stroke. In 2005, Time Magazine named him one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America for his “Left Behind” book series. He received an honorary Doctorate of Literature from Liberty University.
