CARRY EACH OTHER’S BURDENS
As children of God, we are called to intercede for the saints (Ephesians 6:18), which means carrying one another’s burdens in prayer. Intercession is exclusively Christian because only the redeemed—those who have received the free salvation of Jesus Christ—can bear in their hearts the burden of the lost or those who suffer.
We Christians are called to carry each other’s burdens in prayer. Today, however, many Christians spend their time criticizing instead of interceding. Wives criticize their husbands instead of praying for them, husbands do the same for their wives, children for their parents, brothers and sisters among themselves, and Christians criticize their pastors. Every time you criticize instead of intercede, you are not fulfilling the role God expects of you.
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.“ — Galatians 6:2
⇒ The French “Français Courant” version says: Help each other carry your burdens, and in doing so, you obey the law of Christ.
⇒ The Darby version says: Bear one another’s burdens.
⇒ The “Semeur” version says: Help each other carry your burdens. In this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.
The way to fulfill the law of Christ is by carrying one another’s burdens. Carrying each other’s burdens, in other words, means praying for one another. We must support each other in prayer. I have understood that an intercessor carries the burdens of others as if they were his own. A burden is the weight of difficulties.
⇒ Burdens refer to shortcomings, temptations, trials, and afflictions. Instead of standing aside and criticizing, we should be quick to help through our intercessions.
⇒ Burdens are heavy additional loads, representing difficulties and problems that are hard to resolve. Carrying them requires perseverance in this task.
Jesus Christ, our model for effective intercession, continues to carry our burdens at the right hand of the Father. He continues to intercede for us. Let’s read Romans 8:34: “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us!“
The one who intercedes for his brother is, in a way, carrying his burden in prayer. Intercession is a form of carrying another’s burden.
You cannot truly intercede for your brother if you do not carry his burden in your heart. When we carry one another’s burdens, there is no room for criticism in our lives—intercession will dominate instead.
To those reading this book, do not let yourselves be influenced by the spirit of criticism. Instead, be led by love and the burden of praying and interceding for others.
⇒ An intercessor is like a lawyer who stands by someone’s side in times of need to help them. A helper is someone who supports and carries a burden.
We are called to carry each other’s burdens because we are intercessors…
