Celebrate the Positive.
The second key to overcoming insecurity is linked to the first: meditating on and speaking positive things about yourself. We have learned that thinking and speaking negative words about ourselves is destructive. Now, let’s consider the power in thinking and saying positive things about ourselves, in line with the Word. As we’ve seen, our thoughts and words about ourselves are extremely important. We must deliberately meditate on the good things about ourselves, think about them, and speak them for our own ears to hear.
By speaking negatively about ourselves, we begin to see ourselves through this negative lens. Soon enough, we will transmit this negativity to those around us. It is absolutely true that others’ opinions of us never surpass the opinion we have of ourselves. Confident people convey this feeling, and in return, we trust them. Conversely, it is extremely difficult to trust someone who exudes insecurity! This principle applies to ourselves.
If we want to gain the confidence of others, we must show them that we have confidence in ourselves.
Giants or Grasshoppers?
“…and there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” Numbers 13:33
In the book of Numbers, twelve spies were sent to explore the Promised Land. Ten returned with a bad report, and two with a good testimony. Ten returned frightened at the sight of the giants and confessed, “…we were in our own sight as grasshoppers…” In other words, the enemy saw them as they saw themselves. These ten spies fled defeated. Why? Because they couldn’t defeat the giants of the land? No. They were defeated because of their perception of themselves, because of the negative attitude they had towards themselves.
The Power of Positive Confession
Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and possess it, for we are well able to overcome it.” Numbers 13:30
Here, we read Caleb’s reaction, one of the two positive spies. Despite seemingly slim chances, his report was, “We are well able.” He made this assertion because he knew that it was God who had told them to go and possess the land. To overcome this negative way of thinking and speaking, which has been part of our lifestyle for so long, we must make a conscious effort to change. For this, we must make positive confessions.
You might find the idea of talking to yourself strange, yet you’re already doing it! Even if you don’t speak aloud, there’s a constant inner monologue within you. I encourage you to start speaking positively in private, for example, when you’re in the shower or alone in your car. Start deliberately speaking good things about yourself…
