To have your heart’s desires delivered, it is very crucial to clearly understand the fundamentals of hope.

In this context, I’m referring to basic truths you should know and apply, in the working of hope, to make it effectual. These truths are essential in the enhancement of your understanding of how hope works. Let’s examine some of them in this chapter.

Hope Acts as a Helmet to Protect Your Faith

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.”1 Thessalonians 5:8

A helmet is a strong hard hat worn for the protection of the head, especially, on the battlefield. The head, in this context, figuratively refers to the mind of man.

Can you imagine a soldier go to the battlefield without a helmet to protect his head? Sure enough, his unprotected head will be the target of his adversary, and defeat is inevitable!

In the same vein, without your helmet of hope in place, your faith will be the target of your adversary, the devil! As you put your helmet of hope in place, may you not lose ground to the devil any more. The last battle that you lost remains the last you will ever lose!

Doubtless, hope is a spiritual helmet. What a helmet is to a soldier in the battlefront, is what hope is to your faith! Have you ever observed that most of the battles we are confronted with in life, take place in the mind? The reason is because this is where the heat of the conflict occurs, and the enemy constantly delivers blows to our minds, through our thoughts.

The truth is: Your mind is a battlefield! You cannot keep your hope alive on any subject, until you win the battle in your mind: You need to understand that your mind is the realm of your soul. It is the centre of your imaginations, reasoning, memory, attitudes and motives. Usually, the mind wants to rationalise spiritual things and this often results in unbelief.

Consequently, the enemy’s blows aim at gaining control of your thought life, often by offering suggestions contrary to God’s promises. Why? It is to influence your thinking negatively.

In the midst of all these, it is hope that offers protection, by adequately guarding your thoughts. Doubtless, many have been wounded; but, with your hope in place, you shall not!

Evidently, without hope, your faith is not protected. Therefore, it is endangered and susceptible to unbelief.

Hope Acts as a Door to Accessing Your Inheritance

And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.” Hosea 2:15

A door is the gateway or entrance into a place. It is the place of access. If you are to access your inheritance in Christ on any matter, you will need the force of hope. When the door is opened, access is gained; but when it is locked, access is impossible. As a result frustration becomes inevitable, because you cannot take possession of your inheritance.

Surely, hope provides a spiritual opening for faith to come into any situation, thereby taking delivery of your inheritance!

If you have lost anything and desire restoration, hope is the gateway. All you need to do is to keep that door open; this will make way for faith to manifest. When you are hopeless, you become helpless. But with hope, access can be gained and eventually, you possess your inheritance.

Beloved, with hope in place, you can open the door to your place of inheritance at will! Concerning that long awaited promotion, marital, academic, career and financial breakthrough, you shall no longer be denied of what rightfully belongs to you, in Jesus’ name!

Hope Acts as an Anchor

That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.” Hebrews 6:18-19

An anchor is a piece of heavy metal that is lowered into the bottom of the sea, to prevent the ship from moving. It makes the ship immovable and established!

What an anchor is to the ship, is what hope is to the soul. This device makes the ship secure, especially, if there is a storm. No matter how hard the wind blows, if the anchor is in place, the ship is safe.

In the same manner, hope keeps the soul calm and holds it firm, established and secure in faith, even in the midst of trials. Hopeful people are able to handle trials and persecutions patiently, as they assuredly expect their undeniable deliverance and much desired guaranteed change of story!

When hope is in place in the midst of challenges, the mind is kept stable and remains constantly focused on God’s promises. If hope must have a strong base, it must rest on God’s promises. That is His assurance that He will give us our desires; otherwise, our hope becomes delusive and vain.

Think of this: Laying hold on the Word of promise in the Scripture is as holding onto breath for life; it never fails!..
