One of the most remarkable stories in the Bible tells of a servant of God who also held a ministerial position. This servant had a special relationship with the king due to his superior wisdom and intelligence. One day, the other ministers in the same government devised a sinister plan to disqualify the servant of God, whom they saw as an obstacle to their influence. They managed to convince the king to pass a law that prohibited invoking any god other than the king.

This law carried the death penalty for those who violated it. The king agreed to pass the law without realizing that it was intended to trap the servant of God, who was known to pray and invoke God three times a day, openly and without fear. After the law was enacted, and despite the threat of death, the servant of God continued to pray and invoke his God without hiding.

When he was accused of violating the law that prohibited invoking any god other than the king and was sentenced to death, the servant remained calm and serene. He maintained his peace despite the prospect of being thrown into the lion’s den to be devoured. Once in the den, the lions did not succeed in devouring the servant of God. The servant’s God intervened supernaturally and saved his life.

All the administrators of the kingdom, the prefects, the satraps, the advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den. Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.” So King Darius put the decree in writing. Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” Daniel 6:7-10

The servant of God in this story was not saved simply because he was a servant of God. Daniel was spared because, through his peace in the face of the threat, he demonstrated sufficiently that he had faith in God. Daniel honored God through his calmness and serenity. The God who honors those who honor Him also honored Daniel by intervening in a special way in his situation.

We, too, like Daniel, must choose to maintain inner peace, no matter the circumstances of life; for it is only in this way that we can demonstrate our faith in God. It is only then that all the promises made by God to those who have faith can be fulfilled in our lives…
