He Regretted Stopping Work.
The Canadian multimillionaire Dan Lok once shared at a conference that he had always dreamed of becoming a millionaire at a young age and quitting work. His dream became a reality when he became a multimillionaire in his early thirties. Dan Lok decided at that point to move to a millionaire’s island, where he planned to spend his days having fun.
He explained that the first two weeks on this island were wonderful. But starting in the third week, he began to feel bored. So, he decided to watch all his favorite movies. Within just a few days, he had watched all the films he wanted to see. From that moment, he realized he was starting to slip into depression. He called his mentor and shared how he felt.
After listening carefully, the mentor said to him, “Dan, you were born to work, not just to exist.” His mentor made him understand that every time he tried to escape work, he would be tormented until he returned to it. Dan Lok understood this lesson and decided to return to work.
Now, he works first and foremost because it is his responsibility. If we understand that work is our duty and responsibility, we will become happy and fulfilled workers. Our productivity will increase, and the needs of all humanity will be met.
We do not choose work, but we are chosen for it. The Holy Scriptures teach us through the book of the prophet Jeremiah that it is God who chooses the work, or the role we are supposed to perform on earth.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5
Jeremiah worked as a prophet to the nations all his life because God had created him for that. Jeremiah could have chosen another career using his free will, but he didn’t. He chose to do God’s will. Like Jeremiah, we were created with specific skills, gifts, and talents to perform certain functions.
It is our responsibility to respect God’s choice for our work. We will be held accountable for our career choices. No excuse will be valid when the Lord asks us to account for our actions. God has given us the ability to ask Him to reveal hidden things, including those concerning our work on earth.
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3
We all have an interest in working in the field that God has planned for us because it is there that we will be most productive and fulfilled. It is only in this field that we can reach great heights and be among the great. This is what the author of Proverbs reminds us:
“A gift opens the way and ushers the giver into the presence of the great.” Proverbs 18:16
