HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF BABYLON.
The first chapter that we are going to analyse is Isaiah 14, based on a prophecy given to King Nebuchadnezzar by Prophet Isaiah. The body of Christ has mistakenly attributed a section of this prophecy to Satan. To understand this chapter better, let us lay down a foundation, by looking at Babylon’s state during the time of the prophecy. King Nebuchadnezzar was so rich and wealthy, he dominated as a world ruler during his reign and used his excessive wealth to build the most exquisite city of all time. One of the dreams that he had explains his influence, wealth, wisdom and power through Prophet Daniel’s interpretation.
“Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.” Daniel 2:37-38
According to the interpretation, he was so influential that God Himself called him a king of kings, a name only attributed to our Lord Jesus today. That alone explains how powerful he was in his time. Of all the other kingdoms prophesied to rise in the earth, King Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom was rated by Prophet Daniel, as the most influential and wealthiest kingdom that would ever exist in the earth, apart from God’s Kingdom.
During King Nebuchadnezzar’s time, Babylon was the largest city in the world. The King’s greatest accomplishment, was his Palace, which was magnificently spectacular, full of great opulence and flair, as well as the Hanging Gardens, which were the exquisite gardens that he built for his wife because she missed her home.
The Hanging Gardens were so extraordinary, they made the list of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. He is also famous for the walls he built around Babylon, which were so thick, nothing could penetrate them.
The entrance into Babylon, known as the Ishtar Gate was so beautiful; it was also part of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World, though it was later on removed. As a ruler, he was a ruthless leader and commanded the strongest army in the world. For this, all nations feared him, and this allowed him to successfully dominate and take control of several nations. However, God destroyed him because his heart got lifted up with pride, and he made himself a god by building himself a giant statue made out of pure gold, commanding everyone to worship him. This was Prophet Isaiah’s warning to him, that many have misinterpreted to mean Satan.
“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?” Isaiah 14:12-17
