How to Overcome the Traps of Premature Death?
To counteract the traps of premature death, let us read two passages from the Holy Scriptures: Proverbs 13:14 (LSG version):
“The teaching of the wise is a fountain of LIFE, to turn one away from the snares of death.”
The Semeur version of the same passage is even clearer; it says:
“The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, it must help avoid the traps of death.”
Proverbs 14:27 (Semeur version) says: “Revering the Lord is proof that saves one from the traps of death.”
In the first text, the teachings of the wise, the pastor, and the man of God represent a fountain of life. In John 6:63 (LSG version), the Bible asserts something very important. It is written:
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.”
We are therefore invited to go to the fountain of life, where the Word of life is distilled and flows, so we may drink deeply and avoid the traps of death. The second text refers to the fear of God, to revering the Lord—that is, keeping His commandments. Now, to keep a commandment, one must know it, and to know it, one must go to church (where the commandments that give life and help us escape the traps of death are taught).
In John 8:32, from Félicité Robert de Lamennais’ 1846 Gospel translations (LAM), it says: “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
From the preceding passages, we learn that the deliverance or strategy to avoid and escape the traps of death is based on three essential elements:
- Knowing, keeping, and deeply drinking from the teachings of the wise man of God.
- Fearing the Lord God, which means keeping His commandments.
- Knowing the truth, and this truth is not just a word or teaching but also a person: Jesus, our Savior.
