HOW TO PRAY BEFORE A TRIP.
Several examples in the Bible show us that early believers prepared themselves before traveling, especially when the journey was long. Jacob prayed to God, asking for a peaceful journey. He made a vow, saying:
“If God will be with me and watch over me on this journey I am taking, and give me food to eat and clothes to wear, so that I return safely to my father’s house, then the Lord will be my God.“ (Genesis 28:20-21)
Jacob was very bold; he made a vow to God and asked for four things:
- To be kept safe;
- To be provided with food;
- To have clothes to wear;
- To return in peace to his father’s house.
These four points form the foundation of the prayer to be said before a trip, whether long or short, and regardless of the mode of transportation. Another biblical figure teaches us that an additional practice can be included with our prayers: this person is Ezra. Ezra not only prayed but also accompanied his prayer with fasting.
“There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.“ (Ezra 8:21)
Ezra’s example shows us that we can add something extra to our prayers so that God takes full control of our journey, ensuring nothing unfortunate happens to us!
