INNER TURMOIL WEAKENS THE BODY.
We have all experienced fear or worry in the face of a challenging situation. We remember being paralyzed, unable to concentrate or think clearly.
Just as a malfunctioning device cannot produce good results, a person troubled within cannot bear good fruit. Turmoil, which is the opposite of peace, creates a state conducive to the development of cardiovascular diseases and other psychological disorders. These health problems prevent the body from functioning optimally and hinder success.
“The human spirit sustains a person in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?” Proverbs 18:14
At the beginning of my internship as a lawyer at the Belgian Bar, I remember never having peace when I had to argue a case in court. I was often troubled inside because I felt I didn’t have a good command of the Dutch language.
I arrived in Belgium at the age of 17 and had to learn Dutch to continue my studies. Despite the years I spent at university pursuing a master’s degree in law, I always felt that I didn’t express myself well in Dutch. Lacking calm and confidence when going to court had a very negative impact on the quality of my arguments and their outcomes.
I would sometimes forget to mention several essential points because of the inner turmoil I was experiencing. I could easily lose a case to a less-prepared opponent simply because I let the turmoil take over. When I began to develop inner calm and confidence, my way of arguing changed, and my results improved.
I could now remember all the details of my cases without much effort. Calm and confidence had become my strength…
