Money Does Not Bring Happiness.

We have learned a simple formula on how to obtain money. We saw that money is obtained through the product of the added value we bring over time. Money is merely the reaction to one or more actions we take. It is worth noting that money is not the primary source of wealth because there are some people who are so poor that the only resource they have is money.

However, humans have needs that cannot be met by money. For example, we can cite psychosomatic issues, lack of inner peace, depression, and so on. Through this analysis, we realize that money cannot fulfill everything in a person’s life.

Money brings happiness.

I put myself for a moment in the shoes of those who claim that money brings happiness and I ask you to be realistic. Indeed, we recognize the power that money has in our daily lives. It would be wrong to say that money is not at the root of happiness. We live in an environment where everything functions with money and nothing works without it.

We can feed ourselves, clothe ourselves, take proper care of our families, implement our projects, and solve certain problems only when we have substantial financial resources. With money, we can live our lives easily. Imagine for a moment that you are going through difficult times requiring a certain budget but do not have these financial resources.

How would you feel? I think at that moment you would be down and quite unhappy. On the other hand, if you have this money, you would undoubtedly be happy: this is the thought of those who claim that money brings happiness.

My opinion on money

Before saying what I personally think about the subject, I would like to make a small analysis with you. You will agree with me that the expression “Money does not bring happiness” is an assertion. Now, the assertion of something is the result of an experience. Without this, it would be impossible for us to make hypotheses that lead us to assert something. Reread these last two sentences to understand the essence of my thought.

Experience has given rise to the assertion. To assert, we need experiential knowledge. Only the one who has reached the top of a mountain is best placed to tell us and assert with precision what happens at the top of that mountain. The one who has not yet reached it does not have the legitimacy to assert anything because he has not experienced it.

Only the one who has tasted a banana is best placed to explain what it tastes like. Since “money does not bring happiness” is an assertion, I deduce that those who can assert it have come to this conclusion as a result of an experience. Only those who have known a certain form of opulence can declare whether money brings happiness or not.

If you do not have money, have never lived in opulence, you cannot truly know what it is about. I will now base my opinion on the origin of this concept. Many tend to recite this assertion without knowing its source.

The expression “Money does not bring happiness” comes from a novel titled “Les liaisons dangereuses” written in 1782 by the French novelist Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Here is the original transcription:

I admit that money does not bring happiness; but we must also admit that it greatly facilitates it.

By the light of the original thought, we can understand the role of money in life. I think that money does not bring happiness, but rather that it contributes to happiness…
