PERSONAL WORSHIP.
Personal worship is what God strongly encourages us to practice, as it is through this that we gain answers to our prayers and become pleasing to Him. As the apostle Paul says:
“I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12.
True and proper worship involves offering oneself completely. This means surrendering ourselves to become worshippers who address the Master of the earth, our Creator. When we engage in worship, we make ourselves available to:
“(…) make petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving (…)” 1 Timothy 2:1-3
The main elements of personal worship are outlined in the verse above. Let us explore its components in more detail.
The Composition of Simple Personal Worship
A personal worship session consists of several parts:
- Repentance
- Worship and/or praise
- Thanksgiving to God
- Bible reading
- Bible meditation
- Prayer requests and/or supplications
- Fasting (refer to the book Practical Guide to Fasting)
Worship begins as soon as you decide to act in one of the seven areas listed above. Indeed, you may not always have the time to dedicate an hour to personal worship, but depending on your availability, you can set aside 20 minutes or less, or even more. Sometimes you may focus solely on prayer, other times on reading and/or meditation, and at other moments, you may dedicate yourself entirely to worshipping and/or praising God.
Know that even if you practice only one of the seven points mentioned above, you are engaging in “personal worship.” I emphasize this because some people think personal worship only happens when you dedicate an hour to God and perform all seven points at a minimum…
