A young bride interrupted me during my usual discussion about intimate relations before marrying the couple. “Pastor LaHaye, do we really need to talk about this? It makes me uncomfortable. It will work out on its own.” It’s no surprise that this naive young woman became pregnant in the first month of marriage, and I would be surprised if she had already learned how to be sexually satisfied.

Fortunately, most future brides expect to enjoy making love and understand that some preparation is necessary before starting the actual experience. All such young people would be advised to consider the following minimal steps in this preparation:

  1. Learn as much as possible before the wedding night. The previous chapter on sexual education should be read several times to ensure that both spouses understand the functions of the male and female reproductive systems. We believe that reading this book and the others listed at the end of the chapter should not be reviewed together before marriage. However, both spouses should separately read the basic material in advance and then study it together during their honeymoon. This book is intended to help such a couple during their honeymoon journey.
  2. All future brides should consult their doctor several weeks before the wedding to discuss with them the possibility of breaking the hymen in the privacy of their office. If the doctor’s examination shows that the hymen is thick and might hinder sexual intercourse, she should consider having it stretched or cut to avoid unnecessary pain and bleeding during intercourse. However, if the doctor feels that she will not have serious difficulty and the bride wishes, she may choose to leave it intact for her wedding night.

In our enlightened era, a future groom may prefer to have the hymen surgically removed in advance to reduce the risk of causing pain to his virtuous young wife. Another alternative is digital stretching, which the husband can do on their wedding night, but this will require instructions from his doctor.

In today’s active world, many virgins have broken the hymen through accidents while biking or horseback riding, or doctors may have had to dilate it due to menstrual difficulties. The future bride should discuss the issue of contraception with her doctor. We will discuss this in more detail in Chapter 12, but it is important for future couples to understand that the fear of pregnancy can seriously ruin the joy of their honeymoon.

The young couple should understand each other’s feelings and decide whether they are ready to start a family immediately after marriage or not. If they plan to delay, the doctor can advise them on an effective and safe contraceptive.

  1. It is rare for a future bride to be able to predict enough natural vaginal lubrication for her honeymoon to avoid painful sensations during lovemaking. This can be eliminated by purchasing a tube of surgical jelly from the pharmacist, or she may wish to discuss it with her doctor, who can prescribe an appropriate preparation. It would be advisable to have it handy so that her husband can use it at the right time.
  2. The vaginal exercise program designed by Dr. Arnold Kegel is described in Chapter 10. All future brides should become aware of the muscles involved and practice Dr. Kegel’s exercises several weeks before the wedding. The program will allow her to become familiar with muscle control, which most women know nothing about, and it will also amplify her potential sexual sensations during intercourse. It will also provide a way to excite her husband beyond his wildest dreams.

Learning these exercises will also help them achieve simultaneous orgasms. The future bride should carefully study Chapter 10 on female response…
