One Sunday evening, DL Moody and his friends were gathered around a fire. Some guests urged Moody to expose some of the scriptures. Being tired after the day’s services, he gruffly told them to ask Henry Drummond, who was also present. After some prodding, Drummond finally pulled a small New Testament out of his hip pocket, opened it to the thirteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians and, without any notes, began to talk about love. Moody later wrote: “It seemed to me that I had never heard anything so beautiful, and I resolved not to rest until I had brought Henry Drummond to Northfield to give this speech. Since then, I have asked the principals of my schools to have it read to the students every year.
Over the decades, this teaching has become one of the most beloved and inspiring messages of love ever written.
