REBUILDING YOURSELF.
To build yourself, you must develop a deep hunger for knowledge. It is knowledge that fuels your growth. It is the continuous and relentless pursuit of knowledge that will make you a strong leader. As long as you are not a strong leader, you will not be able to build a strong team. Zig Ziglar once said:
“It’s not what you achieve that matters, but what you become.“
Let me repeat: it is not what you have achieved that matters, but the person you have become. That person will determine what you will produce. If you are a weak leader, you will build a weak team. If you are a strong leader, you will build a strong team. That’s why former General Electric CEO Jack Welch once said:
“Before you become a leader, success is about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is about growing others.”
Rebuilding yourself will enable you to have a strong team. You attract who you are on the inside. If you want to lead a team, you must first learn to lead yourself. If you fail at the art of self-leadership, you will have no credibility.
Here are the reasons why you must learn to lead yourself:
a) If you cannot lead yourself, you cannot be a role model for others.
b) If you cannot lead yourself, others will not respect you.
c) If you cannot lead yourself, others will not partner with you.
A leader must take time to know their strengths and weaknesses, and work on themselves. As long as you are not ready for something, God will not give it to you—even if you pray. That was the case with Jesus and Moses, who went into the desert to prepare: 40 days for Jesus and 40 years for Moses. If you delay your preparation, you delay your manifestation.
So, as a worker, you must prioritize the organization’s image over your own. Indeed, any employee who seeks their own interests at the expense of the organization is not worthy of holding certain leadership roles. The members of your team should reflect your image, because you will have to invest in them. That way, you can easily be represented in various circumstances.
Many leaders work hard on themselves to become powerful and indispensable in their field of activity, yet they don’t go far in life. Seeing their success and prestige, they stop building teams for their organization. Other organization leaders understood this early on and built their fortunes accordingly. That’s why the President of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation once said:
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
