We need the spiritual edification that we receive through praying in tongues. The Apostle Paul also gave a prayer of the Holy Spirit in Ephesians 3 so that these believers could receive powerful strength in their inner man to move forward in life.

“For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory, he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner man“. Ephesians 3:14-16

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that Paul is writing here to Spirit-filled believers. Remember, we have already read in Acts 19 the story of some believers in Ephesus, to whom Paul asked: “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” (v. 2). Verse 6 continues by saying, “And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.”

These believers in the Ephesian church were not only born again and had received the forgiveness of their sins in Jesus, but they had also been baptized with the Holy Spirit. Nevertheless, Paul prayed for them in Ephesians 3:16, that they would be strengthened by the Spirit of God in the inner man.

You see, it’s not because you are born again and baptized in the Spirit that you have “arrived” and no longer need anything else in your walk with God! You still need to receive the power of the Spirit of God in the inner man, your spirit. And one of the main ways to achieve this is by praying in tongues.

It is true that you need to know the Word, quote Scriptures, and make confessions in line with God’s promises. All these things are important. But you also need the Spirit of God to infuse powerful strength into your inner man. You need to be strengthened in your spirit because the enemy constantly launches attacks against your faith and life. Thankfully, the enemy can be repelled when your inner man is strengthened by the power of the Holy Spirit! As 1 John 4:4 says,

“He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.“

But how do you tap into the powerful inner strength and spiritual edification that are yours? By praying much in tongues!
