In finance, there is what is called return on investment. Similarly, in the kingdom of God, there is something I would like to call return on seed. It is the profit you make when you sow a seed in the kingdom of God. According to today’s biblical reading (Mark 4:20), there is the possibility of having zero return on seed, or a return of 30, 60, or 100 times what you have sown. Furthermore, as you will learn later in this series, it is possible to have an unlimited return on your seeds.

Two things determine the return on seed. The first is what remains after the seed. In other words, how sacrificial is your seed? The second is the soil on which you sow. Today, I will focus on the type of soil that brings no return on seeds.

Many years ago, I was sowing seeds in a ministry abroad. I knew the law of the harvest, so I continued to sow. However, nothing was coming out of it. I got worried and started asking God what was happening. Then, I had a dream. In the dream, I stood on farmland with heaps of soil indicating that seeds had been sown on this land. I lifted one of the soil heaps, and underneath, there was concrete.

This meant that nothing could grow on this land. When I woke up, I immediately understood the meaning of the dream – the ministry in which I had sown was like concrete. No seed would yield if sown there. If you sow a seed in a place that God does not approve, your seed will yield no return.

God cares for the poor, therefore, when you sow into their lives, Psalm 41:1 says He will deliver you in the day of trouble. God cares for His prophets and ministers, so when you sow into their lives, you will receive a reward (Matthew 10:41-42). God cares for His Church, so when you sow into a ministry, you will be rewarded (Malachi 3:10-12).

If the place where you sow looks like a ministry from the outside but lacks the presence of God, then your seeds will yield no return. You can choose to give money to whomever you want, but if it is a seed, make sure to sow in a place or in the life of a person in whom God is interested. Do not sow your seeds on concrete expecting a return on seed; it will yield nothing.
