Spirits are spiritual beings without physical bodies. They are winds, breaths with the ability to communicate substances or virtues directly from within.

Spiritual anointings, therefore, proceed from these personalities. They may come from angels or demons, or directly from a sovereign action of the Holy Spirit. These are spiritual substances that drive action depending on the case—through suggestion, inner pressure, or subjugation.

They do not always manifest due to an external factor but reach our innermost being through a supernatural infusion of spiritual substance, through an agent who may be God, or simply spirits.

They can thus be distinguished based on their origin: those produced by demons and those communicated by the Holy Spirit and holy angels.

Demonic Anointings

The creation of heaven was richly diversified by the coming into existence of spiritual personalities with extraordinary capacities for ministry in heaven and interaction with the earth and its inhabitants.

Sin was found in the heart of Lucifer (Ezekiel 28:12-19). He drew with him a third of the angels and celestial beings, which is considerable. This brought misfortune to the earth and mankind.

When I was young in the Lord, I heard Christians say that Satan no longer had any power. But that is not true. While the Bible does specify that he has no power over God’s children, it does not mean that his power was taken from him before he was cast out of heaven. Therefore, there are indeed anointings that are demonic.

They are negative emanations that come from all these fallen spiritual personalities and can, as substances, be directly communicated to humans. They can influence through contact and fill any space made available to them. It is through this means that Satan seeks to rule in this world.

Demons can be identified by the type of spiritual influence they exert: Spirits of lust will incite all sorts of fantasies and erotic thoughts to cause sin. It is the same with all the other sins we know. They are always linked to these personalities.

As unbelievable as it may seem, their presence induces or promotes the practice of such acts. You may disagree about the involvement of demons in the negative acts we commit, but how many times have you said: “This can’t be true, I didn’t do that!” Although our will plays a role, many behaviors are induced by evil spirits through inner suggestion.

Man is made up of a spirit, a soul, and a body, each functioning in a specific way. As for the human spirit, it is in contact with the spiritual world from which it receives information. The spirit is also the place where the vital force is received that animates and guides the soul, giving it the capacity to carry out purposes that were suggested to it. Anointing is, therefore, a vital substance that enables the soul’s activity.

The Bible tells us that Satan had put into the heart of Judas Iscariot the plan to betray Jesus. He quickly carried it out under demonic anointing. He only came to his senses after committing the vile act.

In his epistle to the Corinthians, Paul reminded them that in the past, they worshipped mute idols according to how they were led. This suggests that their attachment to idols was the result of the suggestive activity of demons.

Another striking example of demonic activity at work even in Christian ministries: In the Old Testament, a lying spirit filled the four hundred prophets of King Ahab’s court, leading to his downfall (2 Chronicles 18:1-22). This calls for deep reflection on the sources of the revelations we receive and which feed our ministries.

One truth remains: demonic anointings are more real than we think. Satan subtly tries to slip them into our lives and ministries without us even realizing it. This is the case for those who are not born again, or Christians who actively live in disobedience to the Lord’s commandments. They walk under the domination of demonic powers.

God has reserved the best by granting imperfect earthen vessels like us the grace and immense privilege of receiving His divine anointings so that we may accomplish the good works He prepared in advance for us to walk in.

Divine Anointings

These come from two sources: the Holy Spirit and angels. It is not easy to distinguish between the two, but we must understand that in the dispensation of grace, the children of God benefit from anointings that emanate from both sources. However, each dispensing agent plays a clearly defined role according to the Word of God. We will explore this in greater detail in the following chapters…
