Spiritual Refreshment.
Here is another value that we derive from speaking in tongues: the experience of spiritual refreshment. We find the scriptural basis for the role of tongues in achieving this in Isaiah 28.
“For with stammering lips and another tongue, He will speak to this people, to whom He said, ‘This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest,’ and, ‘This is the refreshing’; yet they would not hear.” Isaiah 28:11-12
Notice these two words: “rest” and “refreshing.” It sounds good, doesn’t it? But what is the rest and refreshing referred to in this passage of the Bible? There is a clue to the answer in the words “stammering lips” and “another tongue” in verse 11. However, the answer is fully revealed in the New Testament. We experience God’s rest and refreshing when we are filled with the Spirit and speak in other tongues (Acts 2:4).
In some cases, a doctor may recommend a rest cure to someone under their care. People sometimes go on vacations to rest, but when they return home, they often need to rest from their vacation before returning to work!
Yet, I know the best rest cure in the world. We can take this rest cure every day, and it costs us nothing! “With stammering lips and another tongue” – this is the rest with which you can cause the weary to rest!
I would even go so far as to say this: One who daily benefits from God’s rest cure will never experience a nervous breakdown. Say what you will, it’s absolutely true!
I tell you, in these days of troubles, perplexity, and anxiety, we need spiritual rest and refreshment more than ever. And God has provided us with a way to receive the refreshment we need by speaking in other tongues. We need rest and refreshment! And, thanks be to God, we can enjoy this spiritual rest cure every day of our lives. Whenever we want, we can rest and refresh ourselves by speaking through the Holy Spirit!
