God is Worthy of Obedience

The very first reason we should all lead lives of thanksgiving is because God explicitly asks it of us. This divine recommendation is found in the following Biblical texts:

Giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” Ephesians 5:20

Giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.” Colossians 1:12

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

These three texts clearly tell us that God wants and expects each of us to make every effort to continually give thanks to Him at all times and in all circumstances. The mere fact that God commands us to give thanks should be enough for us to start doing so. If we obey this command, we acknowledge that He is God and that we belong to Him.

But if we refuse to obey Him, we will have chosen not to recognize Him as our God, which would be very detrimental to us. We cannot say that the Lord is our God if we do not do everything He asks us to do. This is why Jesus asked His disciples why they called Him Lord without doing everything He asked them to do.

Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord!’ and do not do what I say?” Luke 6:46

The Lord is worthy of obedience. He is God, and everything that lives and breathes belongs to Him. He holds the universe in the palm of His hand. It is in our best interest to fear and obey Him.

God Commands Us to Give Thanks at All Times

When the Lord asks us to do something, we are always the primary beneficiaries. By asking us to give thanks in everything, the Lord is giving us an opportunity to prepare for a glorious future. In the book of Deuteronomy, the Bible confirms that respecting God’s commandments allows us to always be happy.

And the Lord commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day.” Deuteronomy 6:24

When I began studying the Holy Scriptures as a new convert, the Lord allowed me to understand that it is not only the word of God but also the laws that govern life on earth. As a trained lawyer, I knew that the purpose of laws is to enable citizens to lead orderly, peaceful, and happy lives. All this allowed me to value the Holy Scriptures and consider it a privilege to know and respect them.

We should all feel privileged to know that God wants us to give thanks at all times and in all circumstances. We should hasten to put this word into practice to lead an orderly, peaceful, and happy life.

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law, he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” Psalms 1:1-4
