Communion with the Holy Spirit is truly the key to lasting and permanent success. However, a true and powerful communion with the Holy Spirit requires certain criteria, which I call “ingredients.” These are facilitators of authentic communion. In this chapter, we will look at some of these elements:

A sincere repentance:

Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord” Acts 3:19

“Repent and be converted,” then the refreshment that comes from the sweet presence of the Holy Spirit will come. Repentance is a change of heart, direction, and focus. It is turning back. It is turning away from the old path one is used to following to return to God with joy and love. Your repentance must be genuinely sincere to have access to communion with the Holy Spirit because sin is a barrier or obstacle to communion. I repeat again, sin is the greatest obstacle to true communion with the Holy Spirit.

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you” Ephesians 4:29-32

What do you say daily? Bad communication, bad thoughts, and a bad attitude towards brothers in Christ can break communion with the Holy Spirit if one does not repent. For better communion with the Holy Spirit, you must also keep yourself pure by repenting and confessing all known or unknown sins because He knows you perfectly (Proverbs 28:13).

Develop a deep thirst and desire to commune with Him through prayer, fasting, thanksgiving, and singing in tongues:

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled!” Matthew 5:6

Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance. Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you— The sure mercies of David” Isaiah 55:1-3

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified” John 7:37-39

All the Scriptures above show us that a true hunger or thirst is the foundation of true communion with the Holy Spirit. Anyone who wants to fully enjoy the blessing of communion with the Holy Spirit must first have a burning desire, an intense hunger and thirst for His Presence. Once found, it must be preserved.

Be sensitive to the acts of the Holy Spirit:

The way the Holy Spirit deals with people varies according to individuals and may seem foolish to the natural man; that is why you must be sensitive and always have discernment. Have good listening, tune in to the right frequency, be obedient, and diligent when He instructs us.

Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left” Isaiah 30:21

Learn to listen and note the instructions He gives you at that very moment, and that is how you can encourage Him to minister to you more.

Faith and boldness:

Spiritual things are difficult to grasp; we apprehend them by faith, for without faith, no one can please God (Hebrews 11:6). The Bible says that the righteous will be bold as a lion (Proverbs 28:1b). To have true communion with the Holy Spirit, you must approach Him with boldness without fear, without any trace of doubt to be accepted. Look at what the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews says…
