The primary function of the mind is to give the spirit earthly relevance. It connects the spirit to the physical world and therefore serves as the moderator of our lives. Christians need to understand that the spirit alone is inadequate to handle issues of life in absolute sense.

This is because whereas the spirit relates with God, for “God is spirit…” (John 4:24), it is with the mind that we interpret, respond and influence our earthly environment. Thus, it takes a combination of both the spirit and the mind to control and exercise dominion on the earth.

The devil’s greatest onslaught against believers is usually in the mental realm. He blinds their minds 2 Corinthians 3:14, 4:4) so that they attempt to deal with all issues from a “spiritual perspective” with little or no reasoning; forgetting that reasoning is required to make biblical solutions relevant and applicable to life. 

When the mind is blinded, man remains in darkness and invariably in bondage. Obviously, ignorance is the strongest weapon Satan wields against the Church, but he cannot stand the power of enlightened and renewed minds. That is why Isaiah 25:7-8 says:

“And He (God) will destroy. the face of the covering cast over all people, and the veil that is spread over all nations. He will enlighten their minds. Then death will be swallowed up in victory and tears will be wiped away from off all faces…” (Paraphrase).

Since the mind is the battlefield where man either wins or loses the battles of life, he needs constant mental renewal to be able to competently handle every challenge that comes his way because negative issues only triumph over an individual when he is blinded to the virtues in his mind.

Every man’s worth in life is a function of his contribution to mankind because importance is a product of impact. In other words, the world does not mind those who don’t utilize the rich resources of their minds in creating a better environment around them. It is when a man’s light begins to shine as implied in Isaiah 60:1 that he becomes an attraction in the community.

Looking through Scriptures, it is evident that all the patriarchs exhibited a high degree of mental output. Jacob’s lifting in the house of Laban was as a result of the effective utilization of his mind. So also was Joseph’s enthronement in Egypt. Daniel’s exaltation in Babylon and the glories of Solomon were all outcomes of productive minds. Emphasizing on the immense potentials He invested in the human mind, God said in Genesis 11:6:

“…Nothing will be restrained from them which they have IMAGINED to do.” (emphasis mine).

Jesus clearly showed us how to be of earth) relevance as He practically manifested divine wisdom in His ministry to the amazement of wise men of His time. 

“When He was come into His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works!” (Matt. 13: 54).

God created every individual to provide answers to particular problems on the earth, so man is an asset, not a liability. The human race has entered into the age of mental awareness: an era of mental exploits, the body of Christ like a sleeping giant has also awakened to take her rightful place as Christian men and women all over the world have made undeniable impacts in various fields of human endeavor by engaging their creative minds….
