THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION.
According to the Larousse dictionary, confession means the act of confiding or admitting. Confession is a declaration made with our mouths, from the depths of our hearts, after realizing that we were wrong or had committed a fault or mistake, with the aim of returning to the right path.
It is also a declaration made in faith after believing in the truthfulness of something—for example, the Word of God. Thus, the prayer of confession involves both our mouths and our hearts. We will explain this type of prayer in three sections:
Section 1: Confessing the Lordship of Jesus or the Prayer of Salvation.
“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.“ (Romans 10:9-10)
Anyone who has truly accepted Jesus as their Lord and personal Savior has engaged in this type of prayer. The prayer of confession allows you to renounce your past life with all your heart and voice and decide to live a new life according to God’s Word. Your salvation is not authentic without confessing Jesus Christ’s Lordship with your mouth, for:
“For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.“ (Romans 10:10)
This is the main reason we ask every person deciding to follow Jesus to confess Him. This is not a religious institution but a vital condition for your salvation. Do not merely confess Jesus with your mouth; ensure that the confession is sincere from your heart. The involvement of your heart gives value to what you declare with your mouth. Jesus emphasized this by saying:
“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.“ (Matthew 10:32-33)
Confessing Jesus qualifies you as a Christian on earth, frees you from Satan’s grasp, and enables Jesus to confess you before the Father in heaven. What a joy to know that Jesus confesses us before the Father! Luke 12:8 states:
“Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God.“
This highlights the importance of confessing Jesus. It is not a prayer to be taken lightly, as it plays an indispensable role in the spiritual realm. Allow me to share additional scriptures to help us grasp the significance of confessing Jesus:
- Philippians 2:11: “And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.“
- 1 Timothy 6:12: “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.“
- Hebrews 13:15: “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.“
- 1 John 2:23: “Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.“
- 1 John 4:15: “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.”
Let me conclude this section by saying: Regardless of how many years you have spent in church, if you have never confessed Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Savior, I invite you to do so now. You can do it in the presence of other believers at your place of worship or even alone in your room. The key is to do it sincerely with your mouth. It is an oath that establishes your authority and right to redemption in the spiritual dimension.
You are not called to speak like everyone else. You should not speak like your friends, siblings, or others do outside. Make it a habit to read and meditate on the Word of God. The Word you have read and meditated on is what the Holy Spirit brings to your mind when you face a situation, and it is when you declare this Word that it gains the power to produce your testimony.
Make it a habit to confess and declare the Word of God…
