The Role of Mothers.
David was one of the greatest kings of Israel. He reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. His heart was entirely devoted to God, and he committed only two major sins. The first was that he took Uriah’s life after sleeping with his wife. The second was the census. However, another problem arose for him: his succession. Although God had made it known to him that Solomon, the son of Bathsheba (Uriah’s former wife), would inherit his throne, one of his sons after Absalom sought to steal Solomon’s royal inheritance. This was Adonijah.
The race for glory within great families is always present. While in the monarchies of the past, this question did not arise, it is different in presidential dynasties and landowning families… From the role played by Bathsheba, Rebecca, and even the mother of Zebedee’s sons, we will see how a mother can serve as a compass for her descendant, helping him inherit his right or gain an advantage.
Who is a mother? Strictly speaking, a mother is someone who has given birth to one or more children. But broadly, a mother can also be someone who has mentored a young person, guided them, and helped them become who they are. Thus, sisters who raised their brothers, adoptive mothers, and mentors are considered mothers.
How is a mothers useful for inheritance? From time immemorial, man’s weakness lies in the woman. A man is ready to do anything for the one who brings joy to his heart. She controls his heartbeats. She can, therefore, change the positive or negative intentions of the leader’s heart in favor of anyone. At the end of David’s reign, he had already appointed a successor, saying:
“…The Lord has given me many sons, he has chosen Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel” 1 Chronicles 28:5.
However, Adonijah, in complicity with some advisors, sought to thwart the king’s plans. How did Solomon’s mother help her son inherit the throne despite this battle? A mothers must be spiritually grounded and listen to God day and night for each of her children’s destinies. According to Solomon, a mother rises while it is still night (to pray) – Proverbs 31:15 – and her lamp (the presence of the Holy Spirit) does not go out at night – Proverbs 31:18.
In addition, for royal and presidential families, the mothers must maintain good relations with the leader’s best advisors, the king, the president, the most influential people in his circle whose opinions carry considerable weight. For Solomon’s inheritance, Bathsheba had the grace of having Prophet Nathan, who always spoke the truth to the king.
To put the story in context, Adonijah, Solomon’s half-brother, had already set everything in motion to be king after his father, to Solomon’s great dismay. David’s spiritual advisor, upon learning this, informed the young Solomon’s mother and advised her on the procedure to assert her son’s right.
“He said to her: Have you not heard that Adonijah, son of Haggith, has become king, without our lord David knowing it? Come now, let me advise you, so that you may save your life and the life of your son Solomon. Go to King David and say to him: My lord the king, did you not swear to your servant, saying: Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne? Why then does Adonijah reign? And while you are still there speaking with the king, I will come in after you and confirm your words.” 1 Kings 1:11-53.
Following Nathan’s advice, Bathsheba went to the king’s chamber to carry out the plan. It was there that Bathsheba and Nathan could thwart Adonijah’s plans by asserting Solomon’s right. Note that it was in the chamber that the king, under the influence of his wife and his special advisor, gave orders in favor of Solomon.
The chamber represents the place of intimacy, the place of meeting with God, the place of prayer, the room of conquest that brings forth God’s promises. It is in intimacy that destinies are changed.
“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:6.
Nathan’s intervention also represents prophetic intercession. Prophetic intercession involves praying according to God’s promises. In very difficult situations, you can engage people in prayer to support you:
“Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.” Esther 4:16.
Where was Haggith, Adonijah’s mother? The Bible does not mention her, nor does it mention any advisor who came to plead the cause of the self-proclaimed king…
