In the story of the destruction plotted by Haman, after casting lots, on the 13th day of the first month, letters ordering the extermination of the Jewish people were written and sent to the satraps and governors of the one hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the Persian Empire, to each people in their own language. These were letters of a death sentence. It is likely that the Jews, unknowingly, acted as couriers and delivered the very letters that demanded their own death. But why the thirteenth day?

Biblically speaking, the number 13 is associated with rebellion, sin, and lawlessness. In Esther 3:13, it is stated that on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month (the month of Adar), Israel was to be plundered and destroyed.

The name Adar comes from Addaru in Assyro-Babylonian, which means “dark, cloudy.” This explains why the deities chose this month to execute and accomplish their macabre plan. However, in Hebrew, Adar means glorious and is considered an auspicious month for the Jewish people. Jewish sages say that when the month of Adar begins, one should increase joy, for it is the month of the birth of the deliverer of the Jewish people.

Moreover, the month of Adar has the unique ability to turn evil into good. That is why what was supposed to be a moment of joy for Israel’s enemies became a source of celebration for the Jews of the Persian kingdom. The number 13, therefore, carries a mystery that deserves to be unraveled.

Reading the Bible, we learn that Nimrod was the thirteenth in the lineage of Ham (son of Noah), and he sought to take the place of God. If we apply the hermeneutic principle of first mention, we find the first appearance of the number 13 in Genesis 14:4 (LSG version), where it says:

Twelve years they had served Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.”

Additionally, certain books of the Bible emphasize the idea of rebellion, sin, and lawlessness associated with the number 13:

  • In Genesis 13, Lot pitched his tents toward Sodom, a city of sin and lawlessness.
  • Deuteronomy 13 speaks of false prophets and dreamers who teach rebellion against God.
  • In 2 Samuel 13, we see the story of Amnon, David’s son, who raped his half-sister Tamar. The chapter contains 39 verses (39 = 3 x 13).
  • In 1 Kings 13, we read about a disobedient prophet. Verse 26 (2 x 13) gives the reason for his rebellion against God.
  • In 2 Chronicles 13 (LSG version), it is written: “Jeroboam son of Nebat, servant of Solomon son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord.
  • In John 13, during the Last Supper, Jesus declares that one of His disciples would betray Him; Judas, the 13th person to leave later, clearly represents rebellion, sin, and iniquity.
  • Romans 1:30 describes the thirteenth evil attribute of humanity as being “haters of God.” This passage lists people who do not fear God as “slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents…”
  • Revelation 13 is devoted to Satan and the Beast (the Antichrist). Furthermore, the dragon, a symbol of Satan, appears 13 times in the Bible.

In the specific case of Haman’s plot, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, three actions were to be carried out according to the decree he wrote and sealed with the king’s ring: to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate.

The number 13 carries an energy of transformation necessary to lay new foundations. In the process of Hamanization, what was intended to destroy the Jewish people ended up contributing to their salvation. Because in casting lots every day and month to determine when to kill, massacre, and destroy a people, God—the Father of the Jewish people—was watching. And the DSM (Divine Stage Manager, referring to the Holy Spirit), ensured that the lot fell on the month of Adar, dark and cloudy for their enemies, but glorious for the Jews…
