In my career as a lawyer, I have handled inheritance cases where some members of the same family contested the distribution of assets as outlined in the deceased’s will. These were cases in which the deceased had taken the time to write wills that favored certain heirs by leaving them larger shares.

The common denominator in all these cases is that these larger shares were always left to those whom the deceased loved the most. It often happened that the deceased’s favorites received items to which the testators were most attached. These were often their favorite real estate properties, their favorite jewelry, their favorite cars, to name a few.

The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away; then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.” John 10:10-15

The Bible describes Jesus as the good shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep. We know that there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for those one loves (John 15:13). Jesus did not hesitate to give His life for mankind. If He chose to leave us peace as an inheritance, it undoubtedly means that peace is the best thing He had to give…
