WHY I BELIEVE THE BIBLE IS TRUE – PART (1).
To truly live a fulfilled life, your faith must rest on your absolute belief in the Bible as the inspired Word of God.
I will share with you five fundamental reasons why I am convinced that the Bible is true.
I will present these five reasons to you who want to believe the Bible. I could fill volumes with theological arguments and still not convince anyone who is not willing to believe.
In the Bible, even the resurrection of Lazarus could not overcome some people’s bias. When Christ performed this tremendous miracle, some decided to kill Him. (John 15:3)
Now, human nature has not changed. That is why I present these simple, practical reasons to believe the Bible. They are formulated to help you believe (if you are willing to believe), and to live the happiness God intends for you.
1. I BELIEVE the Bible is true because of its content and harmony.
The Bible has forty authors. They were cowherds, shepherds, sailors, politicians, princes, poets, philosophers, statesmen, prophets, priests, tax collectors, and doctors. They wrote sixty-six books over a period of nearly two thousand years. It contains history, poetry, prose, prophecy, letters, proverbs, parables, allegories, and sermons.
These diverse authors, coming from widely different cultures and traditions, wrote from two continents, in countries separated by hundreds of miles. Yet, there is no disagreement, no contradiction in the Bible. On the contrary, these writings present one doctrinal system, one plan of salvation, one ethical principle, one rule of faith, one story of love and redemption.
Though separated by centuries and great distances, these forty different authors—men and women—wrote from Arabia, Italy, Greece, the Sinai desert, the depths of Judea, a Roman prison, the island of Patmos, the palaces of Susa, Mount Zion, and the banks of the rivers of Babylon and Kedar. How could they achieve such unity, such consistency of thought?
Could all these authors, from such diverse backgrounds and distant regions, have conspired to create the same hoax? That’s highly unlikely. So logic leads me to trust them and believe that what they wrote was inspired by God for the good of humanity.
The Bible has stood the test of twenty centuries. In all of human history, no individual or group has ever succeeded in improving upon its deep meaning. Not a shred of archaeological evidence contradicts its truth. Shame has always fallen on those who ridiculed it. The more I read the Bible, the more I believe it.
Scientists who doubt it are unable to disprove it. In fact, every new scientific discovery can be corroborated by the Bible.
And scholars themselves are not without monumental errors. A few centuries ago, most insisted the Earth was flat.
Even in 1890, a renowned expert said: “Common sense suggests that if a motorized vehicle were built to go 50 mph (80 km/h), the driver would be unable to breathe.” Not so long ago, bloodletting was practiced to reduce high blood pressure.
But the Word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the Word that was preached to you in the Gospel. (1 Peter 1:25)
2. I BELIEVE the Bible is true because of the testimony of the martyrs.
Individuals and governments have often tried to wipe out faith in God. Christians have been persecuted and mercilessly tortured. Bibles have been burned, and its messengers stoned, thrown to wild beasts, boiled in oil. Its prophets have been killed and its faithful murdered. (Hebrews 11:32-38; Revelation 6:9)
But this great cloud of witnesses—men and women who died for their testimony of Jesus Christ—persisted in His principle of love. (Hebrews 12:1-3)
They never retaliated or sought revenge. They never returned evil for evil or wished calamities on their persecutors. They lived and died in love. They did not spare their lives—they were ready to die for Christ. (Revelation 12:11 GNT)
They believed Jesus’ words: “Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)
“The servant is not greater than his master.” (John 13:16)
“We have come to know what real love is because He gave His life for us. And so we ought to give our lives for our brothers [and sisters].” (1 John 3:16, paraphrased)
When so many people have given their lives in love to bear witness to the Gospel, that moves me. It is more than a political or religious cause. It must be something deeply real.
3. I BELIEVE the Bible is true because of the people who taught me to believe it.
Christians were among the best people in our town. They were not delinquents, perverts, rioters, or swindlers. They made efforts to pay their debts and be honest in business. They were not rebels. They never destroyed other people’s property.
They were kind, loving, and peaceful people—the backbone of our society. I could trust them. They would rather die than deceive me. They were builders, not destroyers. They were hard workers, not lazy people. Their homes and lives were clean, upright, and full of love.
They were not violent or abusive. On the contrary, family members prayed and helped one another. Love ruled in their homes.
All this impressed me.
They believed the Bible. They applied its principles. I could trust them…
