Jacksonville Democratic Rep. Kimberly Daniels might literally be the craziest person in the Florida Legislature right now. She is a former “exorcist” who called herself the “Demonbuster”. Although she holds several degrees in theology from a Christian seminary and has written 13 books on Christian spirituality, some of these volumes deal with the exorcism of evil spirits. She expressed positive feelings about slavery, “thanked God” that her ancestors were enslaved, and shouted in a speech that “Jews own everything!” Just yesterday, she admitted to once filing false campaign finance reports.

Now she wants to make sure Florida public school students get their probably illegal dose of Jesus Christ: after passing a measure last year that required the words “In God We Trust” to be placed in public schools Daniels yesterday filed a bill that would require state-funded schools to offer Christian Bible study classes as an elective.

The proposal would require public high schools to create several optional courses: a general course on world religions (which is a pretty normal idea, to be fair) as well as several stand-alone courses on “objective Bible study.” Schools would be required to run three elective courses, including “a course on the Hebrew Scriptures and the Old Testament of the Bible, a course on the New Testament of the Bible” and a combined course on “the Hebrew Scriptures, the ‘Old Testament of the Bible’. Bible and the New Testament of the Bible.” (Hats off to Florida Politics for noting the filing late yesterday afternoon.)

Hilariously, Daniels’ proposal includes a disclaimer stating that it somehow does not violate laws separating church and state and that its biblical-only course will not “favor nor disfavour” any religion by relative to another.
