INDIVIDUAL INTERCESSION.
Individual intercession is a prayer made by a single person. We are called to intercede alone as well for our families, our churches, etc. If you understand these things, you will easily pray for your husband, your wife, etc.
“Epaphras, who is one of you, greets you: a servant of Jesus Christ, always struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God.” — Colossians 4:12
Here, the Apostle Paul is praising the work of Epaphras; what was Epaphras’ work? It was intercession. He continually prayed alone for the church of Colossae.
The Apostle wanted to tell the church of Colossae that if you have reached maturity today, if you keep the faith, it is thanks to the intercession of Epaphras. Indeed, our churches, our families, etc., need people like Epaphras; who are ready to intercede alone, for their family, their pastor, their church, etc.
If Epaphras’ intercession did something for the church of Colossae, in the lives of many Christians in that church, your intercession alone can change things in your family, in your church, etc.
I came through these writings to encourage someone; when nothing works in your family, in your church, do not look for anyone, believe that your intercession can change things, intercede alone! Abraham, to intercede for Lot, did not seek Sarah and others; Moses, when he interceded several times for Israel, did not seek Aaron and others.
During my personal meditation, the Holy Spirit helped me understand that if you are unable to pray alone, you will never be a blessing in collective or mobile intercession (if you are called to do so).
I have been the president of the intercession of my local church several times, and by the grace of God, I am still an intercessor today. Through that experience, I understood that there are two groups of people in the ministry of intercession:
a) There are intercessors who are capable of praying alone for even an hour (They have a personal prayer life); when they come into a collective or mobile setting, they bring the fire.
b) There are intercessors who are not able to pray alone, not even for an hour. These are people who pray or intercede only when they are in a group. They bring heaviness to the prayer, they take advantage of the heat of others, the heat of others pushes them to pray.
God is for Individual Prayer
“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” — Matthew 6:6
This passage speaks to us about individual prayer; it speaks to us about personal prayer, which must take place between the soul and God alone. The Lord encourages us to pray alone.
God Hears Individual Prayer
“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” — 1 Peter 3:12
❖ The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous. The Bible confirms that our God has eyes. (Eyes are used to see, to discover.)
We have a God who sees and discovers the devil’s plans for our lives. His eyes are on the righteous; in other words, His eyes are fixed on the righteous. I would like to tell someone: “You have a God who watches over you, who monitors you. Do not be afraid.”
❖ His ears are attentive to their prayers.
Our God has ears, and they are attentive. According to the Biblical Encyclopedia, attentive means to pay attention. When we pray, God pays attention to our prayers. “The ears of the Lord are open to the prayer, to the intercession of His children.”
If the Lord hears individual prayer, He will also hear individual intercession because intercession is part of the types of prayers according to our foundational text, Ephesians 6:18. Here are some truths that will help us pray or intercede individually:
▪ Believe that God Hears Individual Prayer
Before, during, and after prayer or intercession, believe that God hears prayer.
“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” — Matthew 7:9
Our Lord Jesus Christ speaks to us about individual prayer. He speaks of the effectiveness of prayer and the assurance of a father’s love for his child. A father will not give his child something bad. A father will never give his hungry son something deceitful or harmful. Therefore, we must have the assurance that God hears and answers.
▪ Believe in Your Prayer
When you pray, intercede, you must believe in your prayer; before, during, and after prayer or intercession.
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” — Mark 11:24
Start by believing that God hears you, and believe in your prayer or intercession, and you will see the results… Jesus Christ did these two things before Lazarus’ tomb.
“So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, ‘Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.’” — John 11:41-42
The Lord Jesus believed that God heard individual prayer or intercession, and He believed in His prayer. When you believe that God hears you, this will push you to believe in your prayer; before interceding alone, during intercession, and after your intercession, believe that you are an intercessor.
TO REMEMBER:
In light of this chapter, I understood: Intercession must be an activity in our families and our churches. If it becomes an activity in our families and churches, the devil will be unable to work because there will be the fire of revival in our families and in our churches. We will all be awake.
Prayer:
Eternal, Almighty God, here I am before Your throne of grace, help me through Your Holy Spirit to be an intercessor through this book. May Your Spirit help me to understand what I do not know, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
