We’ve all heard people around us say, “I didn’t have a choice.” Although most people use this expression without being questioned, we must understand that such a statement is unfounded. The truth is that everyone holds the absolute power to choose. It’s true that some choices are easier to make than others. However, the freedom to choose one way or another remains valid for all human beings.

A friend once sent me a video that had apparently gone viral on social media because of the extraordinary nature of the story it told. It was about a man in his sixties attending the trial of the person who had murdered his daughter. At the end of the trial, the man stood up, moved by compassion for the murderer, walked towards him, and embraced him, saying that he forgave him for all the harm he had done.

The gesture of the victim’s father moved many people, as very few on earth would have chosen to react as he did. By embracing his daughter’s murderer, the victim’s father demonstrated that our freedom to choose our thoughts and actions is not at all conditioned by circumstances. Our power to choose is absolute.

German citizens did not acknowledge their responsibility in this massacre because they claimed they were forced to obey the law that ordered them to report Jews.

The truth is that every German had the choice to either obey or disobey an unjust law like the one that encouraged the extermination of Jews. The numerous testimonies of survivors of this massacre demonstrate that a certain number of Germans chose to disobey the law by providing shelter to Jewish families…
