In the regeneration process, God uses anointings to grant legitimacy to the new believer as His exclusive possession. These anointings catalyze the subsequent spiritual actions necessary for the development and preservation of God’s life within the regenerated individual.

They are received immediately at the new birth and constitute the seal of the Holy Spirit for redemption. They are administered by the Holy Spirit and represent the life force, the power of life that establishes the regenerated person in their new position in Christ, assuring both legitimacy and continuity.

Indeed, at the time of new birth, a series of spiritual phenomena take place within the new Christian that can lead to confusion.

It is essential to distinguish between two actions directed by the Holy Spirit that occur almost simultaneously: the first is the implantation of the seed of new life, and the second is the sealing of adoption for the preservation and perpetuation of the inheritance.

The Implantation of the Seed

This is purely a divine miracle. It is a supernatural operation performed under God’s omnipotence, surpassing human understanding. It is sovereign and does not in any way depend on human will. As the hymn rightly says:

I know not why God’s wondrous grace
To me He hath made known,
Nor why—unworthy—Christ in love
Redeemed me for His own…

I know not how this saving faith
To me He did impart,
Nor how believing in His word
Brought peace within my heart.

Adam was called into existence not by his own will but by God’s sovereign decision. Saul of Tarsus met Jesus on the road to Damascus while walking in the exact opposite direction of what pleases God. Jesus personally approached several of His disciples before they ever knew Him.

For most of us, our journey with God didn’t begin in a church, nor was it always the result of our religious upbringing. How can we explain the spontaneous awakening of the awareness of God in a person’s heart? What about the conviction of sin that arises at a key moment in the life of someone who had resisted for so long? How can people who seemingly have everything in human terms still feel empty and yearn for God? Why do most people think about God when accidents or crises occur?

When I was a child, seeing the clouds and their shapes made me think of God watching all my movements. This suggests there are realities beyond human sight and understanding—realities that only God initiates. From these experiences, a spiritual thirst is born, one that will not be quenched until the candidate for salvation finds an answer and makes a decision.

It is the implantation of the Word of God that initiates this spiritual thirst in the human heart, leading the person to pursue spiritual truth. Internal struggles begin, drawing the person closer to salvation and the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

These struggles also serve as proof of the conflict between life and death, confirming the gestation of the divine seed which carries the potential for the creation of the new man.

How then does divine light penetrate the heart and make the sinner aware of their true condition? This is the work of divine anointings!

A fresh and living oil feeds the divine lamp and enlightens the soul of the sinner, allowing them to see their true spiritual state. This anointing channels spiritual knowledge about oneself and about God. It reveals true life through the Gospel of God’s love.

New believers often come to me to share their spiritual experiences. I am always amazed to see that spiritual phenomena had occurred the moment they were exposed to the Gospel—even when they couldn’t understand or explain it. They felt compelled to seek and move toward God.

The decisive moment of repentance brings the first action of the Holy Spirit to an end and opens the door to the second: the sealing of adoption.

The Seal of Adoption

The presence of the divine seed sparks spontaneous vitality in the human soul and brings conviction of sin, righteousness, and judgment, urging the sinner to accept the Savior. From that point on, the repentant person is consecrated to their new life through a living anointing of the Holy Spirit. This is what we refer to as residential anointing.

In a general sense, this anointing transforms mere creatures into divine beings and, potentially, into children of God.

Practically, it catalyzes all spiritual actions needed to activate this divine potential. God ensures spiritual legitimacy for new believers, as well as their co-heir status with Christ.

This anointing is the seal of the Holy Spirit for both redemption and adoption. It means that God guarantees, through the presence of the residential anointing, that the recipient has indeed been redeemed and adopted by Him. This distinctive sign confirms their spiritual identity so that, despite their humanity, they may carry divine authority and receive the various graces, powers, and spiritual resources intended for the saints (Ephesians 1:13-14; 4:30).

The apostle John refers to the anointing as a unique and tangible experience that every child of God receives, establishing them in the Kingdom of God as co-heirs with Christ. It is a significant mark of their new identity and authority. It triggers the outpouring of God’s power for the transformation of the redeemed and the development of their Christian life…
