SLEEP AND THE NIGHT.
The story of creation reveals that darkness covered the earth until God called light into existence. Then God decided to separate the light from the darkness so that there would be night and day.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light ‘day,’ and He called the darkness ‘night.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.” Genesis 1:1-5
What I find particularly interesting about this creation account is that God saw that the light was good. This indicates that the light was certainly a solution to the darkness. When there was only darkness over the earth, the earth was formless and empty, meaning that no form of life was possible. It was this absence of life that God wanted to correct by creating light, which was the foundation for every other form of life.
What we need to understand is that darkness has never approved of the presence of light because light prevents it from existing. The battle between these two rivals is an eternal one, and every human being should be aware of it to know how to position themselves. While light guarantees life, darkness seeks to destroy all forms of life.
This is why nighttime is when most life-destructive activities, such as theft, assaults, and murders, occur. The main reason why so many lives are destroyed at night is that it is the time when most human beings sleep.
The thief, the destroyer, the murderer, and every other wrongdoer take advantage of sleep to commit these crimes. It is easier and more pleasant for them to destroy when their victim is in a state of sleep because the victim will not be able to defend themselves.
I remember one morning after waking up, I went down to the kitchen to get a glass of water and noticed that the contents of one of my wife’s handbags were scattered on the floor. I quickly glanced around the living room and realized that a number of items were missing.
I immediately understood that an intruder had entered the house at some point during the night. I hurried downstairs to check if there had been a break-in. I found that the garage door was half-open, indicating that the intruder had entered and exited through there. Either my wife or I had forgotten to close that door when we went to bed that night.
The thief had taken advantage of the fact that we were asleep that night to enter and steal our belongings. That thief would certainly not have succeeded if we had been awake. The thief who entered my house had only stolen material possessions.
However, there is an invisible thief who steals the invisible things related to your destiny. This thief, whom the Bible also calls Satan, also counts on your nighttime sleep to visit and destroy you. What we must recognize is that we do not have the power to eliminate the night.
Nighttime is one of the circumstances over which human beings have no control. However, we do have control over our ability to stay awake or not during the night. This is certainly why God asks us to be sober and vigilant. God also reminds us not to forget that the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy.
“The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy;” John 10:10
