THE GATEKEEPERS OF THE SPIRITUAL DOORS.
The book of Psalms 24:7–10 shows us how difficult it is to access and open a gate. The gate is often guarded to protect it from those who are unworthy—that is, those who have no right to access it.
In Egyptian mythology, sphinxes guarded the entrances to temples. In Greek mythology, Cerberus is a three-headed dog who guards the entrance to the underworld, preventing the dead from escaping and the living from retrieving them. In Masonic lodges, the Tiler is responsible for protecting the lodge from the gaze of outsiders.
In the Old Testament, cherubim armed with flaming swords prevented Adam and Eve from returning to the Garden of Eden. They are again represented on the veil as guardians of the Most Holy Place. Things remained this way until the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.
From that moment on, the gate to the Kingdom of God was widely opened. Anyone can access it, provided they choose to immerse themselves in God’s love and forgiveness through the sacrifice of Christ. The Bible says:
“Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body…“ — Hebrews 10:19–20.
The apostle Peter, to whom the Lord Jesus Christ gave the keys to the gates of the Kingdom of Heaven—because of the revelation he received that Jesus is the Son of the Living God—was the instrument used by the Holy Spirit to open the doors of the Kingdom of God first to the Jews (Acts 2), and then to the Gentiles (Acts 10).
But this gate of salvation will not remain open forever. The Bible says that a time is coming when it will be closed.
“Someone asked him, ‘Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?’ He said to them, ‘Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, “Sir, open the door for us.” But he will answer, “I don’t know you or where you come from.”’” — Luke 13:23–25.
Once the door to the Kingdom of God is closed, we will again see angels guarding the gates of the New Jerusalem—to keep out the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters, and all liars (Revelation 21:8)…
