THE KING REIGNS
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever, reigning with an unchanging authority that spans eternity.” — Charles Spurgeon
In the previous chapter, we explored how Jesus disarmed the powers of darkness at the cross. He stripped Satan of his weapons—sin, death, and the law—and triumphed over him in a public display of victory (Colossians 2:15).
Yet, the story does not end at the cross. The resurrection marked the dawn of a new era, in which Jesus not only conquered the enemy but also ascended to reign as King over all creation.
Luke 11:22 describes the Stronger Man not only attacking and disarming the strong man but also taking his spoil. This chapter delves into the reign of Jesus, who now holds all authority, having reclaimed what the enemy had stolen. As we move forward, we will briefly explore what this means for us as believers, who share in His victory—a theme that will be examined in greater depth in the next chapter.
The Majesty of His Rule
The resurrection was not merely the undoing of death; it was the enthronement of Jesus. He was raised from the grave not only to live but to rule. In Matthew 28:18, Jesus declares: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
This statement is breathtaking in its scope.
- All authority—not some or most, but all—belongs to Him.
- His reign is unlimited, unrestricted by geography, time, or power.
- His kingdom spans the heavens and the earth, encompassing every realm, kingdom, and creature.
Jesus is no longer the suffering servant; He is the risen King, reigning supreme. Ephesians 1:20-23 provides a magnificent description of His exaltation:
“[God] raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church.”
This passage highlights several key aspects of Jesus’ reign:
1. Seated at God’s Right Hand – To be seated at the right hand of God is to occupy the position of ultimate authority, power, and honor. Jesus, having accomplished the work of redemption, now reigns as the sovereign King, interceding for His people and ruling over all creation.
2. Far Above All Rule and Authority – Jesus’ reign is not merely above earthly powers; it is far above every spiritual force, dominion, and name that exists. Satan, once the “prince of this world” (John 12:31), has been utterly dethroned. His rule has been crushed under the supremacy of Christ.
3. All Things Under His Feet – The phrase “all things under his feet” signifies total dominion. Nothing is outside of His authority—not life or death, angels or demons, time or eternity. Jesus’ reign is all-encompassing, and His victory is absolute.
4. Head Over All Things for the Church – Jesus does not reign for Himself alone. His authority is exercised on behalf of His people. As the head of the Church, He ensures their protection, provision, and ultimate victory.
The Power of His Name
Philippians 2:9-11 exalts the name of Jesus:
“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
This name is not merely a title; it is the essence of His authority.
- The name of Jesus holds power over every knee, whether in heaven, on earth, or under the earth.
- Every being—angelic, human, or demonic—will bow before Him.
- This bowing is not optional; it is inevitable. Some will bow in worship, others in defeat, but all will acknowledge that Jesus is Lord.
His reign is unchallenged, and His authority is universal.
Reclaiming the Spoils
Luke 11:22 describes the Stronger Man taking the spoils from the strong man. What are these spoils? They are the souls of men and women, once held captive by Satan, now reclaimed by Christ. Colossians 1:13-14 describes this transfer:
“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
Jesus did not merely defeat Satan; He liberated those who were enslaved by him. His reign brings freedom, life, and restoration. The spoils of His victory are not material treasures but the redeemed lives of His people, brought into His kingdom and under His loving rule.
The Cosmic Scope of His Kingship
Jesus’ reign is not confined to humanity. Colossians 1:16-17 declares:
“By him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
- Every star in the galaxy, every angel in heaven, every ruler on earth—all exist under His authority.
- His reign extends over galaxies and atoms, time and eternity.
- Satan’s limited domain pales in comparison to the infinite scope of Jesus’ kingship.
The Assurance of His Reign
- For believers, Jesus’ reign is the source of unshakable confidence. Ephesians 1:22 reminds us that He is the head over all things for the Church.
- His authority guarantees that nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38 39).
We are under the protection of a King who has disarmed the enemy, reclaimed the captives, and secured eternal victory. This is the assurance of His reign: no power of darkness, no scheme of Satan, can prevail against those who belong to Him.
A Glimpse Ahead
While this chapter emphasizes the reign of Jesus, it also sets the stage for what comes next. Ephesians 2:6 reveals that believers are not merely subjects of this kingdom; we are participants in it:
“And [God] raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
This profound truth will be explored in the next chapter as we examine what it means to share in the King’s reign and authority…
