“To call out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way. — Proverbs 9:15

When faced with a choice, some people who were once walking on the right path with God opt for what seems best to them—”where they can gain the most”—regardless of the consequences for the rest of their lives. This is the choice of the flesh.

Some choose to engage in extramarital affairs without considering the terrible consequences that may follow. Others move far from their church because they were offered a better-paying job, saying, “God has blessed me.” Then, little by little, they stop attending church. Others compromise in their business dealings, loving money more than God… The worst part of making such choices is that we neglect our relationship with God. This is what we call opportunism.

A young man who had just moved into the area was asking several people in our church for money. Some gave to him, and others even wanted to bless him by buying groceries for him. But while people were purchasing food for him, he was demanding all sorts of unnecessary items. He also wanted his entire apartment furnished.

Then he would get angry and judge people. It didn’t take divine wisdom to realize that his motives were not pure. Eventually, we discovered that he was going from church to church, taking whatever he could. Opportunists choose what seems best to them, but it leads them down dead-end roads, into dangerous detours.

I declare: I will not choose what seems best for my flesh, but I will choose what is best in God’s eyes. I will walk “straight on my way,” and I will not take any of the detours that evil offers me!
