Muhammad Al-Arifi is a Saudi theologian and preacher born on July 15, 1970. He serves as the Imam of the Mosque of the “King Fahd” Academy of the Saudi Navy. He is a student of Mohamad Tablaoui. His sermons broadcast on the internet are widely followed in the Muslim world and known for his Salafist vision.
He grew up in the city of Dammam, and studied his early stages of education there, he studied in “Asamhudy” high school and wanted to study medicine, then joined the Faculty of Sharia, and progress to higher education at the Islamic University of “Imam Muhammad bin Saud”.
At the end of the 1980s, while his training intended him a priori to become an obscure preacher in a small town, he realized the influence that the dissemination of his sermons could exert by modern means such as audio recordings and video, which allow him to create an audience.
He uses the Internet to further expand this audience. He has over nineteen million followers on social media and his sermons are likely to be seen by many more.
He does not hesitate to create controversy to attract attention. Thus, before a trip to Europe, he had declared that “Danish women have so many lovers that they are unable to designate the father of their children[1]”. He also attacks Jews, particularly in connection with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, homosexuals and Shiites and generally maintains a fairly rigorous discourse to the point that the United Kingdom decided in 2014 to ban him from accessing his territory.
Although his speeches also pose a threat to the stability of the Saudi kingdom, his popularity protects him from government pressure. In addition, his sermons can on occasion support state policy, as is the case during the Gulf crisis between Saudi Arabia and several of its regional allies in Qatar. This probably explains why he was not worried during the crackdown in early November 2017, which saw the arrest of more than two hundred people for corruption, even though its initiator, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud explains that he wants to promote a moderate Islam.
