Are you or someone you know struggling with the chains of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco? “Breaking the Power of Alcohol, Drugs, and Tobacco” is here to offer hope and freedom through the power of faith.
“Awake, ye drunkards, and weep and howl, all ye drinkers of wine” – Joel 1:5
Inspired by a deep desire to see individuals liberated from the grip of addiction, this book is a heartfelt plea to fellow Christians and new converts. The words of Shakespeare resonate deeply: “O thou invisible spirit of wine, if thou hast no name to be known by, let us call thee devil.” These addictions are not just habits; they are bonds that can be broken.
This book is not an exercise in self-righteousness or a judgmental manifesto. Instead, it is a compassionate guide grounded in scripture and thorough research, aiming to demonstrate that God’s will is for His people to live free from these destructive vices. In a world where the notion of “liberty” is often misinterpreted as a license to indulge, this book clarifies that true freedom in Christ is not an invitation to sin.
“Breaking the Power of Alcohol, Drugs, and Tobacco” addresses a pressing issue within the Christian community: many believers, including clergy, are caught in these harmful behaviors. Through its pages, you will find a powerful argument against these habits, rooted in biblical teachings and modern research.
Approach this book with an open mind and a willing heart, ready to confront and overcome the menace of addiction. Let this guide be your companion on the journey to reclaiming the purity and health that God desires for each of us. Embrace the challenge, seek the truth, and discover the path to true freedom.

Foreword
It is a social truism that certain individuals in society will be deviant and that certain intrinsic social, environmental and genetic factors conspire to create the incidence of social deviancy in society, alcoholics being no exception. The problem lies in understanding and finding effective means of reforming a social deviant. There are those who believe in predestination, that a deviant in society is so because he was created like that. All his philosophy.of life and circumstances have been predestined.
Then there is the rational and scientific approach which believes in the ability of man to search for a cause and effect analysis to tackle human problems. Thus the emergence and development of behavioural science which secks to treat, manage, and control deviancy in society. Suffice to say that, this science has advanced so high yet we continue to be saddied with increasing numbers of alcohol, tobacco and drug addicts.
Society has always resorted to other means, some esoteric, others religious to keep humanity on a tract of normalcy. This is where I welcome this book from the Rt. Rev. Dr. Charles Agyin-Asare who has been crusading against the menace of tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse for many years. As a man of the Bible, he shows us how to deal with addiction. He rightly postulates that counselling through the medium of religion will implore the necessary religious fervour in controlling the menace of these abuses which is fast assuming the proportions of a bubonic plague in our society.
It is estimated that about 5 million Ghanaians drink alcohol and one out of ten will meet the criteria for alcohol dependence which means that there are about 500,000 alcoholics in this country. Alcohol and hard drugs are often cited in cases of rape, defilement, suicide, homicide, automobile accidents, work place accidents, antisocial behaviours, robberies, domestic violence and child abuse. Alcohol and tobacco are also major health problems.
They are the primary and secondary causes of many medical conditions, including birth defects, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, strokes, infections, neurological and psychiatric disorders. Their destructive effects on our national economy are immeasurable.
This book by the Bishop gives readers another chance to re-examine ourselves, reaffirm our faith in God the Almighty and strengthen our resolve to combat the menace of tobacco and Alcohol Abuse. The book is being published at an opportune time in our history, in an election year when political party thugs, strengthened by alcohol and drugs, intimidate and brutalise their political opponents.
It is my hope that readers of this book will give a thought to this clergyman’s spiritual account backed by biblical authority and help combat the menace and excesses of alcohol, tobacco and drug addiction which are gradually but surely destroying the very fabric of our society.
