The passage below is part of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus is at the beginning of His ministry and is addressing the crowd. He presents new and totally revolutionary principles, which at first glance seem impossible to apply…

• How can we love or do good to our enemies when they constantly hurt us?
• How can we love without limits as Jesus commands us to? It seems impossible! And yet…

But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” — Luke 6:27-28

The battle between the flesh and the spirit

As born-again Christians, we have a new spirit, we have the life of God in us—but we also have the flesh. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak (as Jesus tells us), and it pushes us to react in a natural way: when someone hurts us, we feel the urge to retaliate, to say something hurtful in return, to seek our own justice.

But we have both the power and the duty to silence our flesh in order to let God’s life flow through us.

At first, this will require effort. Some Christians believe they must pray for more love in order to love as Jesus commands. But no! If you are born again, His love has already been poured into your heart, and it is up to you to express it.

And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” — Romans 5:5

Practically speaking, if you struggle to love someone at work or if someone is harming you, make an effort to speak kindly to them, to be pleasant—you will begin to see things change, and the Lord will be able to reveal Himself through you.

Let God’s life flow through you

It is by taking this first step that you will begin to see the life of God manifest. As Christians, we are called to make a difference. Jesus even tells us that it is by our love for one another that people will know we are His disciples—so this is not a minor detail! The more you show love, the more you will feel it. You will become more and more like Jesus, who loved us to the end by giving His life out of love.

So give without holding back what God has placed within you. Be a blessing everywhere you go.

Whoever believes in me, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” — John 7:38

The “rivers of living water” mentioned here refer to the Holy Spirit, who will manifest in us and through us to bless others, love them, and most importantly, touch them for the Kingdom of God.

So from this moment on, silence your flesh and let the life of GOD shine through you!
