AWARENESS OF GUILT.
Guilt.
Despite modern psychology, every human being begins life with an intuitive sense of guilt. The Bible explains that every human possesses a conscience, “which sometimes accuses and at other times defends them” (Romans 2:15).
Today’s proponents of free love try to eliminate the conscience or educate it to the point where it is forgotten during adolescence and young adulthood. However, I observe that after marriage and the birth of children, a previously dead conscience often comes back to life and haunts the individual.
This is especially true for women. A pang of guilt after committing a sexual misstep once or multiple times can later act as a mental barrier to sexual enjoyment.
Guilt is a frequent cause of orgasmic dysfunction, as evidenced by the fact that every book we’ve read on this topic references it. Whether it’s an attempted rape for which the non-consenting victim feels guilty, a misguided extramarital affair before marriage, or promiscuity before or after marriage, guilt is a cruel burden that must be faced spiritually.
As a pastoral counselor, I have had the privilege of leading many women to the forgiving grace of God, either by accepting Christ as their Savior (as explained in Chapter 14) or by applying the cleansing principle of 1 John 1:9. Setting things right with God has relieved their guilty conscience so much that the orgasmic dysfunction ceased.
One young couple serves as a perfect example. Brenda and Mitch did not have strong spiritual foundations when they first came to our church, and their marriage was on the brink of collapse. After accepting Christ, I only counseled them once regarding their marital issues. A year later, Mitch hesitantly said:
“Pastor, I would never have imagined, when I accepted Christ, that he would invade our sex life, but we had never managed to make my wife’s bells ring before our conversion. Now, she enjoys it most of the time.”
Those who have never experienced salvation through faith in Jesus Christ will likely find this hard to believe, but I have seen it happen so many times that I almost expect it now. The reason is simple. When a person’s sins are forgiven, their conscience is freed, thereby removing a common cause of orgasmic dysfunction.
