He is the hero of the 1904 Wales revival. Last revival in 1854 with 100,000 converts. Evolution, liberalism and high criticism had almost destroyed the faith of the people.

Roberts can be a role model for many of us, as he is a living demonstration that God uses the weak to work HIS wonders.

2 Corinthians 12:10
10 Wherefore I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in calamities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
His weakness has truly become a great strength. So much so that this revival is now considered to have had the fastest and most profound impact to date. It got to the point that just by reading a newspaper article or a letter about this revival in any part of the world, a revival would arise there too. The great Pentecostal revival in the United States sprang directly from the news of the revival in Wales.

Evan had little education, he brought no new doctrines, and he was not a good preacher (like Moody). He was also not a dynamic leader, but an excellent follower of Jesus Christ.

Evan was only in his mid-twenties when he woke up. The vast majority of the workers were teenagers and children. Some therefore wanted to come from outside to impose themselves, but seeing the obvious glory of God in their midst, they withdrew.

Start: Miner’s son. His father breaks his leg in the mine, and his son will help him at the age of nine. At 26, he wanted to become a preacher and returned to school. He will not complete his basic education, but later many schools will look at his work. For some time he had sought and found a closer relationship with the Lord. A deacon had already advised him never to miss a prayer meeting, in case the Holy Spirit came. Six days a week, he visited prayer meetings and Bible studies in his church and in the area. He did this faithfully for 13 years.

After school, one day in the spring of 1904, he had an experience that he would later call: the encounter with Mount Transfiguration. The Lord revealed himself to Evan, so that he was filled with the fear of God. For several days, God visited Evan at night. When asked about it, he said it was indescribable. He was afraid to go to college in another city because he was afraid of missing these encounters with God.

On September 29, 1904, Evan and friends went to a Christian convention a few miles from his school. An evangelist, Seth Joshua, leads the meeting. At the end of the service, Evan is shaken by the work of God in him. The evangelist then says: BOW US LORD. Evan hears the Spirit say to him: This is what you need. He then cries: Bend me Lord. Nothing is happening. Two hours later, a powerful spirit of intercession is upon the congregation. Evan has a hard time holding himself back. The Spirit tells him to pray publicly. While crying he shouts: Bend me! Curve me! Curve me! Curve us! At that moment, the Spirit powerfully filled him. He receives love from the Cross and a love for the Cross. The message of the Cross is then imprinted in him, and this will be his only theme during the revival. All his attention is on the salvation of souls. A few evenings later, a friend comes into her room, and he sees her face light up. Evan explains to him that he has just received a vision, and that all of Wales was lifted up to heaven. He prophesies: We will see the most powerful revival Wales has ever seen – and the Holy Spirit is coming now. We must be ready. We have to form a small group to go and preach all over the country. He suddenly stops talking and shouts: Do you believe that God can give us 100,000 souls now?

A little later, in a church, he sees in a vision a group of young people he knows, and a voice says to him: Go to these people. He replies: Lord, if it is your will I will go. A very bright light then filled the sanctuary. On October 31, he returns home by train. His mother is surprised to see him arrive, and asks him: “Why aren’t you at school? Are you sick?” He replies that the Spirit is bringing him back to work among the young people of the local church: Moriah Chapel. (Morija – Place where God asked for Isaac as a sacrifice, and where the temple was built). He also told his brother that within a few days they would see the greatest revival Wales had ever seen.

Evan went straight to his pastor, and asked permission to hold youth meetings. That same evening, after the adult prayer meeting, he asked the young people to stay because he wanted to talk to them. Sixteen adults
