Learning from international conflicts.
“Humans have long been concerned about the final collapse of civilizations, but today more than ever the world has become a frightening place: religious wars, international terrorism and genocides are constantly in the news and, with access to the Internet , the information age will have led to the age of anxiety”. (Sylvia Browne)
Indeed, the world is in turmoil. On virtually every continent on our planet, people are waking up, and the wind of protest is rising in many capitals, in opposition to the power in place. Is it possible to see similarities between these different movements? What can they have in common? These protests first have a certain meaning for the concept of democracy. Some democracies are marked by the rise of a form of nationalism, of withdrawal, exploited by some of their conservative politicians – this is the case of Viktor Orbán -, who readily speak of “illiberal democracy”.
If each case is indeed unique, many nevertheless follow a form of logic that is ultimately quite similar, of which here are some essential elements: It is, often, the youth who carry the torch of protest. It is not a question of the poorest, nor of the least or most educated, but of the young, those who have the future ahead of them in, if I dare say, biological terms, but who, from a point of view economic, social or political view, have the feeling of not having a future.
If the nature of the protests can take on diverse contours, the message they carry sometimes has elements in common, such as the denunciation of the corruption of the elites in power or the rejection of social inequalities that are too glaring. In a certain number of countries, the political explosion is most often the product of a questioning of the existing status quo by those in power itself.
Let us think, in Iran, of this spectacular increase in the price of gasoline, or, in Hong Kong, of the questioning of the formula “one state, two systems” symbolized by the end of the jurisdictional exception of Hong Kong and this famous extradition law. A dialectical logic follows, the crowd taking to the streets in opposition to this upset balance, then the crowd subsequently repressed, the repression further strengthening this popular opposition. In other cases, I am thinking here of Lebanon or Chile, there are straws that break an already very full social vase, and quickly transform economic anger into a political revolt. It is also, probably, the direct consequence of globalization increasingly perceived as unfortunate. The great crisis of 2008 is no stranger to this.
The world is in turmoil today, because it is moving in all directions. On the one hand, nationalism is growing, on the other hand, liberal currents could prove resilient.
Everywhere, there is social protest or resistance. The situation in certain European countries is indicative of this turmoil. (Dominique Moïsi)

“Why do the kings of the earth rise up and the princes join forces with them against the LORD and against his anointed? » (Ps 2:2)
The man who received his anointing is a translation of the Hebrew word mashiah, from which we have the term Messiah. In French, it has taken on a precise meaning since it designates Jesus Christ, the specific descendant of David announced by the prophets. In Hebrew, on the other hand, mashiach designates any person who has been anointed, that is to say consecrated for a particular function in the Israelite theocracy. The anointing with oil symbolizes the communication of divine forces to kings, priests and certain prophets, so that they can fulfill their mandate in the name of the Lord.
The kings of the earth are the political leaders and the princes are the religious leaders. The great people of this world therefore support the people of the nations in their movement of protest and revolt against God and the King he has chosen. In the immediate future it is David or one of his lineage, and in the future for the Psalmist, in the past for us it is Jesus Christ the Messiah. In the New Testament, the apostles apply the words of the first two verses of the second psalm to the despots of their time: King Herod, Pontius Pilate, the Jews and their religious leaders, as well as pagans in general.
And indeed they all rose up as one against Christ and conspired against him to suppress him. In the book of Acts we read:
“All unanimously began to pray to God, saying: “Master, it is you who created the sky, the earth, the sea and everything that is there. It is you who said by the Holy Spirit who spoke through the mouth of our ancestor David, your servant: Why this agitation among the nations? And why did the people conspire for nothing? The kings of the earth have risen and the leaders have united against the Lord and his Messiah. Indeed, it is indeed a league that Herod and Pontius Pilate, the nations and the people of Israel have formed in this city against your holy servant Jesus, whom you have chosen as Messiah” (Acts 4.24-27).
First, the apostles Peter and John were threatened by Jewish religious leaders and then a first persecution was unleashed against the emerging Church. It is the beginning of an alliance between political and religious powers against God and Christ. It will culminate during the Great Tribulation which will see the Antichrist and the false prophet united to decimate all those who have faith in Jesus. But the apostle Peter addresses them saying:
“Know this first of all, that in the last days scoffers will come, who will live according to their own desires. They will ridicule your faith, saying, “Well, he promised to come, but when will that be?” Our ancestors are dead and since the world began, nothing has changed! “But there is one fact that these people deliberately forget: that God, by his word, once created heaven and earth. God destroyed the world then with the waters of the flood. As for the present earth and heaven, they are reserved by this same word to be delivered up to fire: they are kept for the day of judgment, when all who have no respect for God will perish” (2 Peter 3:3-7 ).
Until that fateful day, we live in a period that Jesus describes in a parable, and in which he explains that the wheat and the tares grow together (Matthew 13:24-39). But at the end of time, it is the Lord himself who will separate the wheat from the tares. Today, the Word of God is spreading more and more in the world, it’s true. Churches that are faithful to Jesus Christ are multiplying like never before and more people are having the opportunity to hear the message of the Good News via satellite, radio or the internet.
But at the same time, the devil goes out of his way and sows bad seeds everywhere. People who seek the truth are in extreme confusion and that is right. Furthermore, evil in all its forms is gaining more and more ground. It was in the 20th century that an atheistic philosophy of life and political-economic system first appeared. They still exist in China, North Korea and a few other nations. Nothing like this had happened before. Far from being atheists in the ancient pagan world people worship anything and everything including quantities of deities because they are still relatively close to creation, the beginning of humanity and the revelation of God to the ‘man.
For example, Noah hung out with people who knew Adam. Before the flood, the world was bathed in violence, but people believed in gods. When the Lord gave the ten commandments, none were directed against atheism, but two were against polytheism. I quote them:
“You will have no other god than me. You shall not make for yourself an idol or any image of anything that is in heaven above, or on earth below, or in the waters below the earth” (Exodus 20:3-4).
On the other hand, at the time of David, around 1000 BC. J-C, we begin to meet atheist people. The psalmist calls them fools: “The fool says in his heart: There is no God! » (Psalms 14.1).
Today, the Western world in particular is filled to the brim with fools, especially in universities and science centers. You will perhaps tell me that Christ is still at the top of the bill, that many people consider him a great man and an example to follow. It’s true, but the Jesus who is prized by the populace and the audiovisual world is a superstar who never existed; it was fabricated from scratch. We took the real Jesus, the one from the New Testament, but as it did not fit, scientific artists arranged his portrait and made another Jesus who is in their image, who resembles them with purely human characteristics. He does good to those around him and holds little children in his arms, a bit like campaigning politicians who promise the moon and kiss the babies as they pass. The Jesus of Scripture was born of a virgin. That’s already unacceptable. Then he performed many miracles. Since scientists are unable to explain these phenomena on a blackboard with equations, we eliminate.
Ultimately, Christ died to atone for the sins of the world and was resurrected. So that’s scandalous. Although our civilization is decadent and smells of rot everywhere, no one believes in sin anymore. As for the dead, they remain in their graves, it is well known. This is why those who accept the Jesus of the Gospels are treated as crackpots and obscurantists. But the humanist and acceptable Christ is like a genie out of a bottle, there is not the slightest historical source, not the smallest particle of proof that he ever existed, nothing.
On the other hand, the Jesus of the New Testament is amply attested by countless reliable documents and yet it is those who believe in him who are accused of obscurantism…
