FOREWORD

The work of pastoral ministry and the life of the pastor present some of the most paradoxical situations in life.

While the pastor lives on earth (the present moment) his spirit is actually in eternity (the afterlife). He exercises his ministry in the physical world but it is actually in the spiritual world tinged with metaphysical accents. While he comes from a particular social or ethnic background with cultural consequences, he is both a citizen of an earthly nation and of the glorious Kingdom of God.

Every culture or nation or kingdom has its own acceptable philosophy (what should be done and how it should be done). This is essentially determined by the way the members of this group perceive the world (their worldview) and what matters to them in life. Laws, rules, regulations and norms of acceptable behavior are developed from this socio-cultural environment.

After a while, these norms take root and identify the members of this group. Any violation of these ethical standards is considered a defect or infraction and could result in criticism or sanctions from group members. Those outside the group could debate this issue from their own perspectives but public opinion would not necessarily be able to justify this action with respect to this group.

The Kingdom of God and pastoral ministry have their own ethical standards. These ethical criteria are very demanding for the Pastor given that the spotlight of God and men does not distinguish between public and private life! People’s views of God, Christianity, and your own Church are shaped by the ethical standards that the Pastor upholds.

It is therefore imperative that the Pastor knows how to conduct himself both in the Church and outside it. It is for this purpose that Paul wrote the pastoral letter to young Timothy saying:

“I am writing this to you, with the hope of going to your house soon; but if I delay, SO YOU WILL KNOW HOW YOU SHOULD CONDUCT YOURSELF in the house of God, which is the church of the living God…” (1 Tim 3:14, 1611 Bible – Emphasis mine)

It is my belief that no matter how anointed the Minister is, if he does not maintain the standards of righteous and biblical behavior, he will not go far on the path that God has marked out for him.

It is with the aim of preventing such spiritual disaster or ministerial suicide that my dear friend the Very Reverend Agyin Asare, one of Ghana’s most notable Christian leaders has written this timely book: THE PASTORAL PROTOCOL- MINISTRY ETHICS MANUAL. It is a complete manual of encyclopedic dimension on the subject.

Dr. Agyin-Asare makes it clear in this book that although our contemporary post-modern society rejects any universal standard of behavior, Biblical standards and morality must be the guiding principles of Christian behavior in general and the ethic of ministry in particular. Ministers of the Gospel, those in training, potential Church leaders, lay people and indeed every believer who considers himself a minister of God in light of the “universal priesthood of the believer” would benefit enormously from this book.

Get a copy. Read and digest the content; apply them in your life and in your ministry. You will be successful. You will also have divine blessing and you will attract the good graces of men. Highly recommend this book.
